A note on Green Trainers Online, the 2026 browser-based Pokemon Emerald MMO — and how it finally realizes what the original Pokemon Online set out to build in the Bulbagarden era.

As I was sipping my coffee and doing my morning doom-scrolling before starting my day at work, I came across this:

Now, certainly Nintendo's lawyers are going to go nuclear on this, as they are prone to do. But the first thing that came to mind was that this is what the original Pokemon Online was trying to achieve during the Bulbagarden era. Bored 18-year-old me would have loved to see this come to fruition.

A note written after seeing Green Trainers Online, a fan project turning Pokemon Emerald into a browser-based online multiplayer game with guilds, custom quests, real-time trading, private messaging, and global chat. Nintendo's lawyers will almost certainly go nuclear on it, but it is precisely what the original Pokemon Online (POL) set out to achieve during the Bulbagarden era around 2000–2001 — the game bored 18-year-old me would have loved to see come to fruition.
