AdBot Find & Fry

A parody of Spybot Search & Destroy — one of the most widely used anti-adware tools of the early 2000s, created by Patrick M. Kolla (PepiMK Software). The real Spybot S&D was free, well-regarded, and one of the first dedicated tools to address adware and spyware before mainstream antivirus vendors took the category seriously. AdBot Find & Fry replicates the full experience: • Animated scan that finds 12 period-accurate threats • Results list with checkboxes, risk ratings, and threat descriptions • "Fix Selected" — removes everything, then finds it all again on re-scan • Immunize panel — blocks 12,842 threats (until you undo it) • Updates panel — definitions are 800+ days out of date; server always times out • Recovery panel — perpetually empty • Settings panel — checkboxes that save (cosmetically) The threats are all real early 2000s adware and spyware: Gator GAIN — bundled with popular free downloads, tracked your browsing and served targeted pop-ups. One of the most pervasive. CoolWebSearch.SmartKiller — one of the more aggressive browser hijackers of the era. Reset your homepage every time you launched the browser. Bonzi Buddy — a purple gorilla desktop assistant that phoned home with your data and showed ads. Marketed to children. Somehow. Kazaa.TopSearch — came bundled with the Kazaa P2P client, itself the primary Napster successor after Lars won. New.Net Toolbar — hijacked unregistered domain lookups in the address bar to route you through their ad pages. WhenU SaveNow — contextual pop-ups based on what sites you were browsing. Comet Cursor — animated cursors that reported your mouse position data to a remote server. MarketScore — proxied ALL of your internet traffic through their servers for "market research." All of it. Xupiter Toolbar — another homepage-hijacking toolbar. There were so many. Aureate/Radiate — one of the original adware networks, bundled into freeware everywhere. ISTbar — a dialer. It called premium-rate numbers. On your actual phone bill. DoubleClick — the cookie that connected your browsing across every website you visited. The granddaddy of cross-site tracking. The definition age counter is live — calculated from November 14, 2001 to today. About Spybot Search & Destroy
