n00bXfer 95 — a parody of a late-90s FTP transfer client.

A parody of WS_FTP95 LE — Ipswitch's free Windows FTP client that was ubiquitous among webmasters and hobbyist site owners throughout the late 1990s. n00bXfer 95 recreates the dual-pane Local/Remote interface. The Remote site pane is not fictional: it reflects the actual directory structure and filenames that existed on the FinalFantasyFanatic.com server on November 20, 2002 — the date of the site's final file download before it went offline. The central incident: every file in that download was transferred in ASCII mode instead of Binary. ASCII mode converts line endings between systems — applied to binary files (images, audio, sprites), it corrupts them silently. The transfer completed without error. The files arrived. They just didn't work. Text files survived; everything else appeared destroyed in transit, and for years that was where the story ended. But ASCII corruption is largely reversible: repair work began in mid-June 2026 alongside the revived FinalFantasyFanatic.com forum (https://finalfantasyfanatic.doors98.com/forum/), and of the roughly 600 images in that final download all but seven were recovered — most byte-for-byte — with a partial backup filling in the rest.
