Dark Age of Camelot — A DAOC Story in 4 Parts (and an Epilogue)

Dark Age of Camelot (DAoC) was a massively multiplayer online role-playing game released by Mythic Entertainment in 2001. Set in a mythological world divided into three realms — Hibernia, Albion, and Midgard — the game was best known for its large-scale Realm vs. Realm (RvR) combat, where hundreds of players would clash in open-world battlegrounds for control of keeps and relics. It was a major competitor to EverQuest in the early 2000s MMORPG market.

This file is a personal archive: four screenshots from a February 2004 late-night session on the Morgan le Fay (MLF) server, followed by the email exchange that followed. The backstory: a Blademaster — a Hibernian melee class — had been sold to another player the previous March. Nearly a year later, the original owner had rerolled to Albion and ran into the character by chance during RvR. The email chain that followed is a genuine snapshot of how MMORPG players communicated and formed connections in 2004 — no Discord, no Steam friends list, just a Hotmail address and Outlook Express.

The Morgan le Fay server was one of the most active and competitive DAoC communities of the era. MLF had its own message board on VN Boards (IGN's fan community boards), where players posted realm war updates, debated class balance, and organized guilds. The MLF community was tight-knit enough that running into a character you had sold months earlier — and recognizing it — was entirely plausible.

FieRcEYeD: VNBoards activity and DAoC character-name history

FieRcE YeD identifies VNBoards / IGN account FieRcEYeD, numeric user ID 711096, as his account. The 76 modern IGN post URLs listed below are dated December 5, 2002 through August 3, 2005 and cover Blademaster and Celtic Dual / Dual Wield discussions, later Minstrel posts, and Classic-server posts. These are supplied activity locators, not 76 independently reverified live posts; their current availability has not all been established.

One additional VNBoards reply was independently verified in cached Wayback HTML captured November 2, 2002 at 02:48:46 UTC. The Morgan le Fay thread identifies FieRcEYeD as user 711096 and message 37673642, dated October 3, 2002 (the year follows from capture and thread context). The reply asks, "Am I one of those jerks in Unforgiven?" and includes a smiley. Its captured signature reads "Fierceyed YourAdHereFIVEGOLD Lvl 45 Blademaster" and "Fierceyedtwo Lvl 16 Bard". Guild affiliation is implied rather than explicitly stated; server association follows from the board context. Signature and profile fields are capture-time evidence and may have changed after posting.

FieRcE YeD recalls Mythic removing the joke surname YourMomThinksImHot and replacing it with Sullivan. Although he initially recalled late November 2002, his contemporaneous FFF follow-up reports the name change by November 18. He recalls responding on November 27 with LikesHisNameChanged: a small protest written directly into the character's name. The replacement with Sullivan, Mythic's involvement, and the protest's motive remain owner recollection; the missing VNBoards surname-nerf thread has not been recovered.

The published captures show an exchange from pages 12 and 13 of the restored FFF topic SPAM THREAD PART II. On November 16, 2002, at 6:25 PM Central, FieRcE YeD wrote, "Check out this. I have proof that your mom thinks im hot ... Look at the last name!" He linked his Camelot Herald character page: http://www.camelotherald.com/chardisplay.php?s=Morgan&c=301399 . On November 17, RTV King replied, "thats what you made your last name lol"; FieRcE YeD followed, "lol isnt it great? Im wondering how long it will be until I get it appealled lol". RTV King answered, "yea that would suck". On November 18 at 4:19 PM Central, FieRcE YeD reported, "logged on this morning, and they changed it". That final post, number 184, provides a contemporaneous report that the name had been changed; it does not name Sullivan or identify who changed it. The exchange does not spell out the contiguous original surname. The Herald URL is preserved from the original post; its page content has not been recovered here. These published images are modern captures of restored posts, not the missing VNBoards thread.

The published forum images are modern captures of the restored archive, not screenshots taken in 2002. Their displayed post dates use America/Chicago time: the opening post is November 16, 2002 at 6:25 PM Central, and the final report is November 18 at 4:19 PM Central.

The published screenshot sshot031.png is a PNG conversion of the owner-supplied game screenshot. Its visible label is Fierceyed LikesHisNamesChanged, with Names plural, above the guild label <UnNatural Disasters>. Its original filesystem creation and modification timestamps are November 27, 2002, 16:47:39 UTC, consistent with the owner's date; no date is visible in the image itself. The image confirms that displayed name, not how or why the name changed. The owner identifies the character as his Hibernian Blademaster; the screenshot does not explicitly label the player's class or realm. The recalled spelling LikesHisNameChanged and visible spelling LikesHisNamesChanged are retained separately.

After rerolling as an Albion Minstrel in spring 2003, FieRcE YeD recalls using YourMomSTILLThinksImHot: the joke returned with an emphatic STILL. The published screenshot sshot051.png reads Fierceeyed YourMomSTILLThinksImHot above <Mists of Avalon>. Its original filesystem creation and modification timestamps are May 17, 2003, 23:50:08 UTC; the image itself shows no date or explicit player-class/realm label. The Albion Minstrel identification comes from the owner's account.

FieRcE YeD recalls needing a unique character name when he rerolled on Morgan le Fay. During a real-life phone conversation, a player named Mope, whom he believes was a Mentalist, pronounced his character name as "Fierce eyed". He recalls adopting that reading and adding the extra e, resulting in Fierceeyed. The phone conversation and reason for the spelling are his recollection; the screenshot independently preserves the visible spelling.

The 76 listed IGN URLs and the separately verified Wayback reply are activity evidence, not alternate-identity links. Character spellings, mutable signatures, and inferred connections are kept distinct. No claim is made that the original surname-nerf thread has been found.
