“Don’t blame me. Blame yourself, or God!” — Delita, Final Fantasy Tactics
When people get upset, they tend to feel the need for blame. That is normal to blame others rather than themselves. However, some companies are feeling the effects of the blame. Recently, Columbine High School victims' parents sued the video game industry for making violent games. In some past suits, some people sued the gun companies for making guns, and the people won. I strongly disagree with defendants of the lawsuits that had no involvement whatsoever with the incident. It is like suing the car companies for causing all these car accident. Games, guns, and cars are tools. They can be helpful or harmful depending on how it is used. However, people seem to think that whoever produces these tools are at fault.
The problem with guns is that anybody can have one, thanks largely to the second amendment. People in the 1790's didn’t realize the effects of the second amendment that it would have in the future. They felt the need to protect themselves from British soldiers, and nobody would use guns to kill each other. Little did they know that the consequences that it would have on the future. The gun industry distributes it to a gun retail store and if the gun retail store distributed a gun to a person who shouldn't have a gun, then the store should be the target of the suit rather than the companies.
Now the video game industry faces its toughest critic. Video Games are becoming increasingly violent. Some might say, "Why are there so many violent games?" Well, it is what the people want. If everyone wanted games that didn't have any violence, then they wouldn't make them. Now, the issue about video games is that violent games make kids more violent. The video games don't just ignore the young people. They put ratings on the games, making it illegal to sell a Mature game to an minor without an adult permission. Generally it is the adult's responsibility to monitor what the kids play or not. It is the same thing with movies. They have ratings for a purpose of letting the parents know who are the people being targeting to.
The car industry has not faced a lawsuit, but let me explain why should a lawsuit be dismissed if a lawsuit occurs. A drunk driver drives into a innocent bystander, killing the driver and the bystander. Not feeling satisfied suing the driver, they sue the car company. Now how does a car company be relate into being a part of the blame? They were the weapon, but does a weapon fire itself? Most of the times, it doesn't however If that happens, then the suit is justified
The companies have been blamed for doing something that they didn't do. Guns don't kill people. People kill people. The person is responsible. The companies should say "Don't blame us, blame yourselves, or the constitution."
