Doors 98 is inspired by the late 1990s / early 2000s personal computing era — part satiric, part authentic archive. The OS shell and its apps are parody: the software names are fictional, the interfaces are exaggerated, and none of it is affiliated with the real companies they reference. Some content inside those apps is real: the forum posts in the FFF Archive are authentic posts written by real people in 2002. That folder also includes the restored FinalFantasyFanatic.com website from the final download before its November 2002 shutdown, published as an annotated archive on September 5, 2026. The playlist in BassJamb is a genuine 2001 Morpheus download list. The code in DevCode is real school work from 1997–2004. The DAoC file contains real screenshots and emails from 2004. The Downloads folder contains real software artifacts from early fan communities. Other content is satiric even within the apps — fictional news headlines, parody chat logs, made-up system messages.
